Merlot Failed Its Friday Job Interview
Red wine was on offer, so Friday's usual rum got swapped for a Merlot. Turns out wine goes down faster than rum ever did, and worse, it doesn't stop the rum turning up afterwards.
Thursday I was already craving a bottle of red. Friday’s normally a rum or Jack day, but the Merlot was on offer, so Merlot it was.
It was a nice change. It was also gone a lot quicker than the rum ever is. Rum and Pepsi Max has a natural stopping point — 35 ml, maybe a second one, and that’s that. A bottle of red doesn’t work like that. The glass gets topped up, the bottle stays open, and somehow the evening just keeps going.
Here’s the bit that actually matters, though. It wasn’t wine instead of rum. It was wine, and then rum anyway. The Merlot turned out to be an appetiser, not a replacement, which meant I’d quietly added a second drinking session to the evening rather than swapped one thing for another.
So Friday wine can’t become a thing. Not because I didn’t enjoy it — I did — but because it doesn’t stay in its own lane. Back to pirate petrol next week. Merlot’s failed its job interview.
